Annual max contribution

Health savings accounts are regulated by the IRS annually. Here are the set limits this year and next year.

HDHP coverage

2023

2024

Individual

$3,850

$4,150

Family

$7,750

$8,300

To qualify for the Family limit, your HSA-eligible HDHP must cover at least 2 people.

Catch-up contributions

All individuals age 55 or older who remain HSA-eligible can make an annual catch-up contribution of $1,000 to their HSA.

If a spouse is covered by your HSA-eligible health plan and does not have a disqualifying circumstance, they can open a separate HSA to contribute a $1,000 catch-up contribution as well.

Overcontributing

Contributing past the annual limit is not uncommon. It could be due to a miscalculation, auto-deposit error, employer overcontribution, or eligibility changes.

Whatever the case may be, the IRS will apply income tax and a 6% excise tax to the amount over the annual limit when you file your taxes.

If you end up going past the annual limit, it's easy to correct an overcontribution in your account!

Annual contribution deadline

You may continue to contribute for the previous year until the tax filing deadline for the year. Please note that a tax filing extension does not affect the contribution deadline!
