You can deactivate your investment account if you have liquidated all of your assets (i.e., sold all your HSA investments).
Before Deactivating Your Account
After deactivating your investment account, you will no longer be able to invest HSA funds. If you decide to invest HSA funds again, you must meet all investment requirements and go through the onboarding process to open a new investment account.
How to deactivate your investment account
Select the Profile tab from the side menu.
Under Personal, select Investments.
Under Deactivate Investment Account, select Deactivate My Account.
If you currently hold any investments, you'll be asked to sell all remaining investments before closing your account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some common questions we answer about deactivating investment accounts.
What happens after deactivating my investment account?
You will immediately lose your ability to invest HSA funds. You will also lose your investment transaction history (e.g., charts of your funds' growth and losses).
Do I have to sell all my HSA investments?
Yes. Your investment balance must be $0 before you can deactivate your investment account.
How do I sell all of my HSA investments?
You can sell each asset individually by going to the Investments tab.
Can I deactivate my investment account while a buy or sale is "pending"?
No. You cannot have any pending investment trades. You must wait until the purchase or sale is cleared.
If I deactivate my account, can I open a new account later?
You will need to go through the entire investment onboarding experience again and meet any requirements for opening a new account (e.g., minimum balance to invest).
If you deactivated your investment account before June 15th, 2025, the option to go through the onboarding experience again will not be immediately available to you. Please reach out to our support team to continue investing.
Will I stop being charged investment fees after closing my investment account?
Yes. Your final investment fee will be charged on the first of next month. This will be the last investment fee you will receive for your investment account.
Will I still receive my dividend payouts?
Most likely yes. As long as your HSA remains open, we will transfer any remaining dividends to your HSA cash balance. If you deactivate your investment account AND deactivate your HSA, we may be unable to transfer your dividend payouts in time.
When will I receive my dividend payouts?
The timing of dividend payouts depends on securities as dividends pay at different frequencies.
