Whether you have an expense you want to submit for reimbursement or want to save it for later, you have the option to add it to the platform whenever works for you.
Bank account required
If you haven't linked a bank account to your Health Wallet, you'll need to before getting reimbursed. (See "Link your bank account.")
Step 1: Add your documentation, or skip it
Select Add Expense from the home menu, then choose:
If you have a receipt, bill, or EOB: drag the file in, or select "choose a file," to upload it (supported formats: JPEG, JPG, PDF, PNG; on mobile, you can also take a photo). The platform scans your document and prefills matching fields, look for the magic pencil icon, that means it was autopopulated.
If you don't have a receipt: select "No receipt? Enter details instead" to skip the upload and enter your expense details manually.
Documentation not required, but highly encouraged
Unlike claim-based benefits, HSA reimbursements don't require documentation to be submitted, HSAs aren't reviewed by an administrator. Still, we highly encourage uploading documentation for tax recordkeeping. (See "Recordkeeping for HSA expenses.")
Step 2: Review the fields
Review any autopopulated fields and fill in anything left blank:
Benefit (required): select the benefit you're submitting for (Health Savings Account)
Amount (required): how much you're requesting, shown alongside your available balance
Transfer To (required): the linked bank account funds will be sent to
Category: defaults to Qualified Medical Expense. (See "Categorize funds leaving your HSA" for the other options.)
Date of Service (required): the day you received the service or purchased the item
Description: details about the service or items purchased
Step 3: Submit now, or save for later
Choose whether to submit the expense for reimbursement now, or save it. Saved expenses are stored under Saved Expenses until you're ready to submit or delete them, useful if you're not ready to be reimbursed yet, or if you're practicing the HSA shoebox strategy.
The HSA shoebox strategy
You can claim medical expenses any time after establishing your HSA, so you can reimburse yourself whenever it's convenient. The shoebox strategy is a long-term approach where members hold off on reimbursing themselves so their funds can keep growing tax-free.
Picking up where you left off
Saved an expense earlier? Go to Saved Expenses to find it and continue where you stopped.
Reimbursement Timeline
Reimbursed funds typically appear in your linked bank account within three business days.
