Categorize HSA transactions

​Qualified or Unqualified? Correction or Rollover? Learn how to change the category of a health savings account transaction.

It's important that all of your transactions are categorized correctly in your HSA, as it can impact your tax forms, but we recognize that mistakes happen. Fortunately, recategorizing transactions is easy.

How to categorize HSA transactions

In your account:

  1. Select the unqualified transaction listed under Transactions.

  2. Select the correct transaction category from the panel: ​Qualified Medical Expense, Unqualified Expense, Correction, or Rollover.

  3. Enter the rest of the required details and submit.

If tax forms have already been generated for the tax year, you may no longer be able to change the category of a transaction. Reach out to our support team for assistance.

Transaction types

Unsure which category to choose? Here is an explanation for each transaction type.

Qualified Medical Expense

HSA transaction made for a qualified medical expense.

Unqualified Expense

HSA transaction made for a non-qualified expense.

Correction

Funds withdrawn or deposited to compensate for a non-qualified expense or excess contribution.

Rollover

HSA funds moved to another HSA account.
