Qualified medical expenses for HSAs

Your health savings account has a lot of eligible expenses. Review this list of qualified medical expenses to ensure you maximize your HSA!

Updated over 7 months ago

Our team is a big fan of the triple-tax advantage (tax-free deposits, tax-free growth, tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses) that HSAs provide! We're here to make sure that you can take advantage of those benefits before you spend your funds.

So what can I spend on?

The IRS has defined a broad list of medical expenses and procedures that can be paid with your HSA. Some have specific requirements to be qualified and some, like insurance premiums, are not covered at all.

It's hard to remember what's qualified and what's not, so we partnered with the HSA Store to bring you their expansive and searchable database!

Unqualified Expenses

The IRS set a broad list of qualified medical expenses but there are notable medical expenses they do not deem as qualified.

The following CAN NOT be expensed with an HSA:

  • Child care for healthy babies

  • Health insurance premiums*

  • Funeral costs

  • Maternity clothes

  • Pet expenses

  • Vitamins

To check if something is qualified or unqualified for HSA spending, check out the HSA Store's database.

Avoiding IRS audits

The IRS can be particular about keeping HSAs in check. To make sure that we protect your savings from taxes and penalties, we've built a way for you to easily categorize transactions and keep receipts for them.

Things to keep in mind

Items and procedures already reimbursed by your health plan or an LP-FSA are also unqualified expenses and can be costly at the end of the year. Make corrections to your account as necessary and research what's qualified for spending and what your plans cover before using your HSA!
